captain mal: the anti-kirk
One of my favorite moments ever.
…most of the actors I get all fangirly over are men.
Now, granted, I’m a straight-identifying woman, so it makes a bit of sense that I would get especially enthusiastic about super-talented male actors.
BUT I’m also a theater person and although when I fangirl someone part of it might be crush-like, I also do really just love fantastic acting (especially intense dramatic acting) so women shouldn’t be completely cut out of my fangirl heart.
From now on I’m going to make a conscious effort to recognize the badass women actors I come across. They deserve my flailing just as much as their male colleagues.
So without further ado, I’m going to spend a brief moment here fangirling over the enormously talented Summer Glau.
I mean really. River is by far my favorite character on Firefly. She is so complicated and mysterious, with so many layers. And Summer Glau does an absolutely fantastic job in both the TV series and in the movie.
That moment in Serenity when she goes sprinting out to confront the mob of Reavers? That gorgeous sequence when she’s cutting them down one by one in the most bizarrely beautiful massacre I’ve ever seen???
Gah!!!! So good! Not to mention the fact that Glau somehow manages to be believably “off”, which is INCREDIBLY difficult to do. It’s so easy to overact, chew the scenery, and in general disgrace yourself when you have to play someone “crazy.” Instead, Glau doesn’t play some tasteless general “crazy”, but instead inhabits the particular mindset of this troubled, damaged young woman, without telegraphing/bludgeoning the audience with the abnormality of that mindset.
Where is she in my life??
Summer Glau! Fans of super-amazing actors and freakin’ amazing sci-fi characters rejoice!!!
